Upon my first listen all I could think about were the summer days when I sold ugly board shoes and ‘Jesus is my homeboy’ tees at a skate shop in a run down Arizona mall.

The punk ridden screamo chug and whine style hit close to home with my 16 year old freshly dyed jet black hair in my face as I tried to put grip tape on a skate deck for the first time. Not only does the latest attempt from the Irvine quartet, Thrice, make me question what determines a strong constant evolution for groups like Thrice, but what could possibly motivated them to change their sound to where it is today?

Throughout ‘The Alchemy Index Vols. III and IV’ the vocals are extremely unemotional and not so sweet to any educated ears. The first five tracks took some time to get through, although I might be an impatient nervous case. Then the sixth track, ‘Silver Wings’, was a surprising little sweet melody with mixed electronics and appealing vocal harmonies, but yet it lasted little over two minutes.

Thrice performs a seemingly sporadic cover of ‘The Earth Isn’t Humming’ by Frodus. The blend of acoustic guitars makes for an interesting mix, but ends by transitioning into a clever pseudo folk tune entitled ‘Come All You Weary’ which then ruined any interested I had in the record.

The album lacks progression as the music is structured in a very inadequate scheme. Keyboards and acoustic guitar are poorly utilized throughout the album giving off a vibe of uncreative boredom. This album is unoriginal, bland, and takes only one listen to understand that the new direction Thrice took within the past few years has been a slow and rough path to find out that claps and soft chord progressions aren’t solving the problems within mainstream music today.
